Terre Haute Terre Haute is located in Vigo County and is the county seat. Terre Haute is intersected by highways 40, 63 and Interstate 70, and is on the banks of the Wabash River. In 1816, the Terre Haute Land Company bought land from the U.S. government where Terre Haute now stands, and employed William Hoggatt, a civil engineer, to lay out a site for the town. The name Terre Haute is French for "high land." Indiana's ninth largest city, Terre Haute has a population of 61,125. January's average temperature is 27 degrees and July's is 77.3. The city is home to Indiana State University and several other colleges. Terre Haute is the birthplace of the Coca-Cola bottle. Places to visit include the Swope Art Museum, Candle Holocaust Museum and Children's Science and Technology Museum. Socialist leader Eugene V. Debs was born in Terre Haute as well as composer Paul Dresser, best known for composing the state song, "On the Banks of the Wabash." Terre Haute is part of the Terre Haute, Indiana metro area.
