Rayne

Rayne Township was formed from Washington and Green Townships in 1847. By 1870 it had a populatoin of 1,731; by 1910 there were 3,485 living within it's boundaries. It was named for Robert Rayne, an early settler.

A blockhouse was erected "on the John Thompson farm" in 1790 and removed in 1811 from disrepair. It was 80' x 30', two stories high, with two ranges of portholes and a 10 foot high stockade of sharpened poles. There is no record of any attack upon it. Indeed the Cornplanter tribe of Senecas are said to have often helped with home construction in the area. The names of early settlers, Thompson, Chambers, McKee, Stuchell, O'Neil, Walker, Davis, Little, Shoenberger, Kinter, McElhoes and McHenry are still familiar. They were for the most part of Scots-Irish and German descent.

The McKee Mill on McHenry Run was Rayne Township's first business, built around 1905. It had an over-shot wheel 16 feet in diameter and two feet wide, and could grind three bushels of wheat per hour.

Kellysburg, now Home, was named for Meek Kelly, who plotted it in 1838. A blacksmith shop, store, hotel, shoemakers and carpenters soon followed, all crucial to life in a rural village of the time. Presbyterian religious services were commenced in 1861.

Chambersville was named for Elisha Chambers, who purchased the tract of its location in 1789. It had at one time at least two hotels. In 1913 the principal store there was that of the Seneca Mercantile Co., run for the accommodation of the miners.

Kintersburg (Gilpin Post Office) was named for Isaac Kinter, who opened the first store in 1854. The office, opened in 1861, was named for the Gilpin family.

Tanoma was organized about 1890, and named for the post office established there.

Ernest, built as a mining town at about the turn of the century, commenced coal operations in 1905. By 1912 eleven hundred men were employed there, mining 3,500 tons of coal daily. It had two churches and a six-room public school building. Its coke ovens lighted in the night skies for decades.

In 1913 the churches of Rayne Township were The Crooked Creek Baptist, The Washington Presbyterian, The Rayne Presbyterian, The Cumberland Presbyterian and Methodist Episcopal, The Dunkard, The Grove Chapel Lutheran, The Bethel Lutheran and the Catholic and Union Church in Ernest.

In 1870 there were nine schools in Rayne Township, by 1913 there were nineteen. The Rayne township Consolidated School opened its doors in 1927 under the principalship of Charles Postlewaite, thus closing several of the one-room buildings. It was closed in 1963, when the present Rayne Township Elementary School opened.
