Conemaugh From 1770 until 1794 settlers were quite insecure in this area because of the Indians. One of the Indian warpaths was along the Loyalhanna River and an Indian town was also located about one mile below Saltsburg on the left bank of the Kisiminetas River. So, as a means of defense, the settlers built a blockhouse, which was located on the Dixon Farm. In spite of the frequent interruptions by the Indians, the settlement into the area was rapidly extended. In March of 1807, a court appointed person made a report and presented a draft of the division of the township of Armstrong. Five townships emerged from thi division, to wit: Blacklick, Conemaugh, enter, Armstrong, and Washington, which were approved by the court. Conemaugh Township is located in the southwestern part of Indiana County. The first settlers of the township were mostly the Scotch and the Irish. These settlers came east from the Allegheny Mountains. The first election of Conemaugh Township was held on March 20, 1807 at the house of Samuel Marshall. The election officers were two judges, John Marshall and Alexander Thompson. The election was held to elect the constable, the supervisors, and the overseers of the poor. Archibald Marshall was elected constable. Robert Fulton and John Matthew were elected supervisors. Robert Ewing and Thomas Reed were elected as teh overseers of the poor. Over the years, Conemaugh Township has established many recreational areas within the township. There are two ball fields and public swimming pools, which are located on 10th Street off of State Route 286 in the Saltsburg Extension. Also, along the Conemaugh River, you can find the Conemaugh Dam. Further down the River you will find the site of the Conemaugh Hydro Electric Power Plant and the Tunnelview site.
