Canoe Canoe Township was formed in 1847 by dividing Mahoning Township in half, including what later became Banks, Grant, and Montgomery Townships. The township was named from the Canoe Creek. The Canoe Creek is located in North Mahoning and Canoe Township. It flows northwest into Jefferson County and empties into the Mahoning Creek. The name is derived from the belief that its mouth on the Mahoning was head canoe navigation.
Canoe Ridge Post Office opened August 7, 1861 and Job Pearce was the postmaster.
